There are many inspirational stories lurking in our Beacon schools, businesses and communities.

Not all are easy to tell, or even find at times, but when we do, and we have someone happy to tell their story, we like to share. We’ve gathered case studies of individual students, of businesses actively involved in our program, and of schools ecstatic with their results since joining the program. From time to time, we also get nice emails from people telling us how the program changed their life – where possible we collect this information, but are not always able to share. |

An amazing Charter Signing was held at James Meehan High School recently in Sydney, New South Wales. Here are a few good news stories from the day, referencing the mentor system, Buddy Up, that has been put in place under the Beacon program. It was a pretty emotional charter signing- for all the right reasons! And it was very obvious the impact this program has had on all students involved.

Kelvin - Kelvin’s Mum and Grandmother turned up to the event. His grandmother was almost in tears telling us the change in Kelvin since he met his mentor, David. She said Kelvin is a man of very few words in public but he spoke the mentors praises when he was at home. His mother said Kelvin doesn’t have many positive male role models in his life and that is why his mother was so glad he had met David, his buddy up mentor through Beacon – it was emotional! Both talked of the guidance David gave Kelvin and how his mentorship was so valuable to him.
Ethan – Ethan’s mentor Gerard would have been really pleased to see how far Ethan had come in a short while. He gave a speech at the Charter Signing and thanked Gerard publicly. He is now working at EB Games- his ultimate part time job! And said he got the job because of his CV and Cover Letter Gerard helped him with. He said his boss had told him his cover letter and CV was well beyond anything he had ever seen for a part time job and that is why he gave him the position. Ethan is over the moon with actually working, he was the student who said he didn’t think he could get a job before this experience – so a big step for Ethan.
Aymen - Peter (mentor), Aymen was really disappointed to hear you are moving overseas- he was wondering if he could keep in contact with you via video conference?!?! Aymen had applied for an apprenticeship and got the job! However the job was full time and he wanted to focus on school so didn’t accept the offer. He has applied for a school based traineeship and is waiting to hear back from that. He was asked, ‘Did buddy up help you at all with these jobs?” Aymen responded “Yeah totally man! If it wasn’t for buddy up I wouldn’t have gotten the job”. So he is doing really well.
Billy Jean - She is not applying for jobs at the moment though is keen to take up an SKM work experience spot (hint, hint!). Billy Jean commented “Everyone who went to buddy up is already ahead of everyone at school, we all had to write our CV’s and we already had ours!” she also said “It was a good feeling knowing there are people who care and support us”. Pretty power statement!
