Suzanne joined The Beacon Foundation in 2012 and is thrilled to be part of an organisation that builds innovative partnerships to support young people and their communities.

Suzanne has degrees in Cultural Anthropology and Arts Management.  She has worked as a manager for educational programs and directed a variety of community arts projects in Chicago, Los Angeles, Barcelona and Melbourne.

Originally from the United States, Suzanne has lived in 6 countries and travelled to many more. She eagerly returned to Melbourne in early 2011, and finds it difficult to imagine herself living anywhere else.

Maroochydore State High School held a “Welcome to Work” day last Friday (May 11) and got into the spirit of careers by dressing for different careers.

The students used the event to survey students in preparation for their Speed
Careering event, as well as to create a bit of a brand in the school –
highlighting their roles, creating a stir and handing out Beacon Ambassador
branded lolly pops at the survey session in morning tea.

What a great way to get peer buy-in for the speed careering session and to lift the
brand of Beacon within the school.

For many young people who are not suited to long term study or university, a career begins with an apprenticeship, traineeship or entry level job. For many, making the switch from school to work can be challenging.

Real Futures Generation (RFG) is a project initiative of the Beacon Foundation, a well established and successful organisation with 22 years experience working with schools all over Australia to motivate and inspire students for personal success once they leave school.

By June 2013, the RFG goal is to have placed 180 young people in real jobs, matching the demand for talent in our partner organisations, with students from Beacon schools.

Placements are available exclusively to students from Beacon schools.

RFG will help with school based preparation for these opportunities in consultation with the school, students and prospective employers.

“The work of organisations like Beacon is making a major contribution to Australia and we’re strongly committed to providing training and employment for young people wherever we can,” he said.

Leighton Contractors, one of Australia’s most significant companies, has been supporting the work of the Beacon Foundation since 2008 through its Community Investment program and is now working closely with Beacon and its schools to create pathways to real employment for students through the RFG Project.

To support the project, the company’s Services Division and People and Capability team have developed Pathways to Employment, a apprenticeship/traineeship program to support young people to transition into the workplace.

Four students from Sydney’s James Meehan High School in Macquarie Fields students have started school-based apprenticeships and traineeships through the program (Business Administration and Mechanical Engineering),with one student from Matraville High School  in Chifley being welcomed into a full-time Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship.

As a company employing over 10,000 people across Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, Leighton Contractors offers a wide range of jobs across the infrastructure, construction, mining, telecommunications, energy and services industries.

Leighton Contractors is now working closely with Beacon to identify more training and employment opportunities across the company.

Leighton has been a firm supporter of Beacon at events such as this speed careering day,and now are heavily involved in the Real Futures Generation project.
